The NHS is running a National Chlamydia Screening Programme Why are you screening for chlamydia? Because chlamydia is the most common sexual infection in the UK. 1 in 10 people under 25 who are tested have it! Wouldn't I know if I had it?
Probably not – most people have no symptoms at all. Some people do have symptoms however which include unusual vaginal discharge, pain when passing urine, bleeding between periods or after sex, pain in the lower abdomen or testes (balls). If you have experienced any of these please come to one of our clinics and get tested. Can you cure it? Yes with anti-biotics. We will give them to you free of charge. What happens if I have it and don't get tested or treated? Chlamydia is a bacteria that affects the sex organs. If not treated it can spread to other parts of the body and cause long term problems such as pain (in the abdomen) and infertility (being unable to have a baby). This risk increases if you get affected again and again. You also risk giving it to all future partners. What is the test? A simple urine test – you pee in a pot and we send it away for testing. How do I get my results? You can choose, letter, text message, phone call or e-mail. Will you tell anyone? No. Numbers are counted by the Health Protection Agency but we do not give them your name or details. Where can I get more information? From www.chlamydiascreening.nhs.uk or come to any one of the clinics listed.
